Relief India Trust is a Scam NGO, Do not Donate!

relief-india-trust-fraud-scam

So I recently got a bunch of calls from an NGO calling itself Relief India Trust. The calls themselves were a bit odd and over zealous with the volunteers flinging themselves at me and describing the plight of children in gory detail, but it was the frequency of the calls that first gave me a clue that something wasn’t right. Then, when I finally decide to put in some money, there’s a volunteer who calls me up, takes me through the donation process and then offers to stay on line until I give her a Transaction ID for the bank transfer.

I did up a Google search and found tons of consumer complaints about the organisation. And if you notice their NGO registration number in the link above, it’s just a plain four digit number: 3696. The Indian Government has an NGO search site where you can search for voluntary organisations by name or their unique registration ID. 3696 doesn’t turn up Relief India Trust. Neither does a search for their name. These are a bunch of scam artists.

Real NGOs probably needn’t be this aggressive. I donate every year to SOS Children’s Village India, which has been my charity of choice since forever. They have a unique take on bringing up disadvantaged children, a personal dialogue (if you wish it) between your kid and you, and I’ve visited their centre in Kerala too.

Update: I’ve receive a legal notice from Relief India Trust. Further developments in a new blog post: Relief India Trust, the Scam NGO, Files a Legal Notice Against my Blog Post for Defamation

      Hi ,

I am not aware that these people are a racket of fraud. Without knowing I served them for four years on a monthly basis donation and once I realised they are fraud.i stopped paying. But that day onwards they are taking revenge on me by giving my phone number to so many other fraud people.

Now a days my situation is every day I get a min of 2-3 different phone calls and the harassement is keep on going.
Now they are black mailing me if I don’t give money they will keep harassing like this.

from today onwards I will keep note their numbers and will reach cyber crime cell going forward.

Here is my first number noted – 7428015289

It all started from the person Nitin – 9650163429

Please suggest me how to teach a lesson to these kind of fraudsters

    Dear All,
Not sure how to respond to this forum about true/real or fake. Let me tell you my experince, I was about to donate to Relief India today after reading this discussion forum I thought let me clarify how much it is true or fake. I called up the hospital where the patient is admitted undrgoing the treatment based on the details I have received from the NGO. I spoke to the treating Doctor and hosptial authorites directly and he/they confimred that yes, the trust has reached out to them to help the patient family and the treatment charges are agreed to pay by the trust during or towards the end of the treatment/ during discharge. And I have aksed hospital people to share the bill details who paid how much and they agreed to share. I think, there are many fake NGOs but we should be careful in donating is what I feel. Anyway, it is individual preference no bias please.

I am not sure about this feedback from Dr. Mallikarjun Koripadu. According to earlier feedback the patient name will be genuine, however the The Relief India will call for next 6 months with the same patient name. As per my inquiry the hospital suggested not to donate from remote place as there are lot of local NGO’s and donors at AIIMS. My suggestion would be to donate to any patient/teatment then pay for some one at local area and not from a remote place which you can not verify.
I have called Relief India trust to share the website and account details, in the photo gallery the trust name in the banner is not matching/edited as well as the name of account holder is different in Bank. The account was not with trust name. So it’s outright cheating.

I am also involved in social activity by company for which I work for. My company has done lots of good work for an orphanage and I am also actively involved.
Today I got a call from Oceanfoundation to donate for a 1.1 yr kid for open heart surgery. I asked them to share the parents details with me, I’ll talk to them and help them as I opened my own NGO. They simply cut the phone and no call back, but sent an SMS where the age of the kid changed to 3 yrs.
They are actively involved in the scan and they are doing fraud.

    mswunitaiims @ gmail. com?

If this is an official fund of AIIMS then why created email ID on gmail domain and not aiims official domain? Or is it another so called NGO who are benefitting by collecting email IDs and contact details of people like us – most of the people here have already donated or look willing to donate and they may prefer to donate to “AIIMS” fund thinking at least this one is official.

Best to do personal enquiry of NGOs within your own town or nearby and donate personally.

AIIMS has not authorized any NGO to collect donations on its behalf or for patients admitted at AIIMS.

A disclaimer regarding the same is also available on AIIMS website (www.aiims.edu).

AIIMS cautions the members of public not to fall prey to any such claim of any NGO. If the member of public wants to donate money for poor & indigent patients, then the donations can be made by Bank Draft/Cheque drawn in favor of “AIIMS Poor Fund Account”. Donations made in favor of AIIMS Poor Fund Account are eligible for deduction U/S 80 G of Income Tax Act, 1961. The Bank Draft/Cheque along with a covering letter could also be directly sent by post to Medical Superintendent, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Ansari Nagar, New Delhi-110029.

    1. I also got a call from a similar fake NGO. I applied the simple trick of scam-baiting against them.
I kept on entertaining their calls , but didnt do any real money transfer. FInally the guy got frustrated and stopped calling me.

This is kind of fun, when you harass the scammers and turn the table on them, give them a taste of their medicine.
But you should be careful in not actually meeting them , as that can get dangerous.

It has been observed that some NGOs (especially RELIEF INDIA TRUST, MISSION HEAL and A GIGGLES WELFARE ORGANIGATION) are contacting people in different part of country to collect money for patients undergoing treatment in AIIMS and they are claiming that they are certified from AIIMS, New Delhi. The Certificate you have asked about is a Certificate of participation in a seminar; it doesn’t mean any kind of endorsement from AIIMS.

It is hereby informed that above mentioned NGOs are not associated with AIIMS. AIIMS has not authorized any NGO to collect donations on its behalf or for patients admitted at AIIMS.

  14. Apart from the proofs provided here in this website, i can provide a more authentic proof from side to show that these NGOs are fraudsters.
Its a RTI reply officially provided by AIIMS
    * Find attached images below.
    * AIIMS have a Medical social welfare unit which is been formed to help the poor patients admitted AIIMS. What the three fraudulant NGOs claims is that they are associated with this medical Social Welfare unit and they are handing over the fund collected by them to this medical social welfare unit.
    * In the RTI reply AIIMS have clearly mentioned that the medical social welfare unit has no association with these NGOs and complaints have already been received from various places that these three NGOs are involved in illegally colecting money for poor patients admitted at AIIMS. AIIMS have particularly mentioned the names of these three NGOs viz. Relief India Trust, A Giggles Welfare Association and Mission Heal and have marked them as frauds.
    * So i dont think any more proof is required to prove
    that these NGOs are frauds.

  15. Even I have been getting calls from Relief India trust since about a year now. Initially I did not budge – I prefer to donate locally to some nearby NGOs (plus in India we have quite a few in all cities).
Later then I donated a couple of times on their site. I did do a personal level check on the NGO list -> http://ngo.india.gov.in/ngo_search1_ngo.php (Yes it is present in the list).
My experience was good. I got my receipt with the NGOs PAN and a copy of their approval from Income tax for 80G exemption, each time i donated. (although I do agree the volunteers are under prepared – after all they represent the NGO on such calls)
I completely understand it feels bad to see your money go in wrong hands but I think its better to not reach a conclusion without confirmation of fraud (at least lets not do harm if we can’t do good). I personally think RIT is not a fraud.
Btw if anyone wants to check my receipts and etc, there’ll still be in my inbox. 😀

Insisting people and Vishnu to keep it an open discussion rather than direct accusations.
Also if any one lives nearby – please go and check. it shall reveal the truth for us all then! The registered address on the Income tax 80G approval and receipts they mention is this

Open discussion?Really?Providing someone with a receipt is nothing but an acknowledgement of the receipt of the fund. Their approval of 80G?It is not in their discretion to ‘approve’ 80G.Also,once again, the receipt, invoice, forms do not signify that the funds would be utilized for the purpose specified.

The very fact that such an organisation is making false claims of being linked to or having affiliations with AIIMS,Delhi, which AIIMS obviously has squashed and cautioned the public about it,is a red flag. Why make this false claim? If one wants to make donations, then why not to AIIMS Social Welfare or any other legitimate ,legal and trustworthy organisation? Why would one go through a third party? How does one know if the fund in actuality went to AIIMS or for that matter any other hospital?

There are many such questions. and serious questions, must I say.We cannot and should not turn a blind eye to any of these. The truth is hidden. What are the actual operations of such NGOs is a big question.Let us remember that regulating such organisations a huge task in India which has not yet been accomplished.

I have searched its website twice and on the first note i didn’t found anything wrong. But When i search for both NGO’s Website registry details , found that Owner is same, And now i know that it is also a scam. Got MSG with words like ‘ Today almighty God had chosen you to save this child’ are too emotional and suspicious.

I too got call on 5th August,2015 from mobile 9211539398 a person named Neha Rani Sahoo, taken the name of Dazy Parveen and pleading like anything. I said if interested get back to them (1st mistake). Then they started calling me multiple times and sent me a mail with details as below.

Subject – ******Save the life of Baby … suffering from Blood Cancer at AIIMS Hospital********

I didn’t completely check the mail or check on-line (2nd mistake).

On the very next day morning I was bit busy with some urgent work they called multiple times (20-25 times) from multiple numbers (7053431895, 9716478744, 9716478744, 9211539398 ) and even messaged multiple times from 9211539398 saying – child condition is very serious sir, bla bla …

They called once again in the evening from 7053431895, I agreed I will donate 1 injection cost Rs.1180 (3rd mistake).

I blindly believed them and agreed to donate three injection cost Rs.3600 while paying on-line (4th mistake), actually they asked me over phone to round it off to Rs.3600 from Rs.3540 while making donation on-line.

After payment done when I asked for the 80G receipt, they are not able to give valid answer for that.
Later day I found one of my relative paid Rs.3540 to ReliefIndiaTrust few months back, they haven’t provided any receipt so far.

Why they are creating so much urgency? Answer is not relative, they said – we collected Rs.1,30,000 so far for the child out of required Rs.2,80,000.
When they have some money collected, why there is an urgency created? – No answer.

I have some other Qs still in my mind as below:
Why there is need to call from multiple numbers?
Why they are creating so much urgency?
Why they keep call on hold while making the payment on-line?
Why they keep on demanding more money than we actually agreed to pay?
Why they use words like – “don’t cheat us sir by not donating”?

I have been participating in an NGO working for blind girls empowerment nearby my house, any NGO will never operate like above.

Actually, they were asking my friends numbers too, to make victim of them, fortunately I didn’t give.

    Please don’t believe anything blindly.

  21. First thing I did as soon as I rcd the call was check online for scams and I came across this blog. Thank you for taking the time to publish your experience, Vishnu, you have prevented so many people from being fooled, including me. I got a call for Priyanshi and the girl told me to go to the website rigth now adn make teh payment. I told her I am not online and then she asks me when I will be. I told her since I do not know when I cannot tell her either so I’ll call her if I decided to make a donation adn I hung up on her. What sick people!

I paid 12260 last week toward injection cost. Just saw that this is a scam. How to file a police complaint in Delhi as i do not stay there..

  22. I also got call for “priyanshi ” today like few others,so there cud b some girl priyanshi who really need our help.
yes even i am not sure whether money goes directly to needy or some part of it or is it fake ?
my husband pays for other ngo( national ngo) which also work for the same cause ,patient suffering with cancer or heart problms in aiims . they also call people.
How they decide which ngo will work for which patient, since priyanshi was not listed in national ngo?
As for the tone of callers sounding needy and desperate, well most of them are volunteers (mostly young and may be emotional or agitated or annoyed by refusal ) but yes, they have no right to critisize or curse people in the name of god.

Still i want to believe ,they must be doing some work for poor.for some articles have been written abt them in some leading newspaper.i have found this name (Shikha Dhawan, chief aid officer with RIT) many times

Dont think i work for them . i am like most of u who got the call.
This ngo is under 80g ,it is listed under Ngo,s working in India.after reading all the comments i found some peole have visited their rehab centre also. they have few kids suffering with different diseases.

I just want to say ,we can’t meet such needy people in our daily lives on our own .so only thru these organisation we came to know abt such people, very rarely we get the chance to help someone in such need,so for once a month if we pay something like in thousands for some good cause ,there is nothing wrong.
whether for this ngo or anyone which u think is real .
We all have mortgages and children’s school fees to pay,but still amidst all this expenditure we need to spare some money to help poor( somehow, we all have spare money for clothings ,footwears, pizzas etc inspite of paying mortgages)

i conclude, i really dont konw about this ngo but i still believe in good deeds and giving, and will pay for Ngo whom i trust.
WE NEED TO TRUST OTHERS otherwise how can we help anyone ??

I too get the call from this organization. This time the patient is a kid suffering from Blood cancer. I have browsed the internet and ended up in this site. Thanks for the information.

  25. One more unethical behavior from these fraud company…

Thanks Vishnu for saving hundreds of innocents hard earned money going into the hands of these fraudsters. Every others should understand the effort you did to prove them what they are. All your efforts, pain you took will really worth it when others take it seriously stop entertaining such fraud companies and when genuine trust/NGOs take their way towards the achievement of their goal.

One commenting against your blog should make a note before commenting.
    – Does genuine NGOs really need name & fame to serve the needy? In fact there are so many serving the society without even known to the world. Orphanage next to my home was known for long time.
    – O.K. Let’s take it in a positive way… YES they need support to plan it in a big, better way and to gain trust in this corrupt world. For that do they need to blame the people for not giving / trusting them by their unethical behavior when people deny to contribute?
    – Do they need to worry if they really are doing well and if someone is against them?
    – Why they need to take other’s website down?
    – Why their legal actions didn’t proceed further from almost a year?
    – Why you need waste your time posting everything here instead of remain quite?

I too got a call on day before yesterday from the no. 9066153596. Here I told them that I would be directly donating to Priyanshi’s parents. Guess what was the reaction from Vikas Jain (8745801500) on the other end. “I was asked to contact them before I reach hospital”. When asked why they should be contacted when I have all the required details to meet the patient. His reply was still it will be difficult to find the patient by my own. Now I can understand what and all you might be guessing? However still I request you to take it in positive way.

Why should I be taunted when I denied to pay them by their same old accusing dialogues (great trainer he is who taught all these fellas a common dialogue) “God is watching”; “It’s not your kid that is why you don’t want to make the payment”; etc. What frustrated guy can do other than shouting and disconnecting the call? Don’t know the reliability of this case. However I am sending my contribution to “AIIMS Poor Fund Account” which might not help that particular child, but some one else.

Because of these fraudsters innocents are suffering.

Got the call today about a girl Priyanshi and looked upon internet for the trust details and found your blog.
got call from 9211134591 and 8745801314

Thanks Vishnu. With your blog I was able to get away from their trap.

  27. I also got a call today for a child named Priyanshi. Then I googled and landed on this site.

As Vishnu mentioned that the NGO is not listed in the Govt of India NG site, but when I
searched against Relief India, I could see that the name is appearing in the search, though with a dfferent address but the telephone numbers and email address match:

    http://ngo.india.gov.in/view_ngo_details.php?ngo_id=RIT2010&ngo_black=0&t_state=0&t_dist_new3=0&sector_key=0&ngo_name=Relief India&uniqueid=

Now, I am not sure if this really genuine or fake?

  28. Hi’ I also got a similar cl 2days bck

I got call from 9210553084 saying its from AGWO and desperately need a donation for a boy who is on ventilator. This is looks more suspicious considering all above comments, their mode of interaction and desperation.

Firstly Thanks Vishnu Gopal, I would have really donated in case if I dont see this site.

They better change their database. As I got a call from them about Mayank and Priyanshu…

  31. Received a call from +919716478670 today morning. Claimed to be an NGO named Relief India Trust . They were asking me to contribute to their trust as they had to get a girl child named Priyanshi suffering from cancer immediate medical attention .They were very persistent on me donating the money . Even after me telling them that I’ll do what ever I can they wanted me to act immediately as the surgery was due in 30 minutes.

Their persistence was very suspicious because no where will we be seeking funds having a patient due for surgery in half an hour. Checked online and it’s confirmed that they are scamsters . We have all heard of the Nigerian lottery scam but still they employ the same old tactics as there are many unsuspecting people who can be moved with touching tales of young girls suffering from cancer. Donate to genuine NGO’s who are working for a good cause. There are many NGO’s who are working with good intent and a few like Relief India Trust are enough to spoil the crate. Do check before you donate.

Let your hard earned money reach the needy and not the greedy

    1. I too received similar calls today. Thanks for sharing your information which helped me.

“Please find below an urgent and critical case of Master Mayank who is only 1.4 years old and is fighting for his life at Kalawati Saran Children’s Hospital suffering from a life threatening Infection in the Intestines.

Please spend some time to go through the attachment and the entire mail to have a fair understanding about the case and the condition of the patient, your generous contribution can make a child see the world and bring a smile and happiness to his parents.

Master Mayank is 1.4 Years old. His father’s name is Sandeep Chouhan. Their address is Sector 12, Kanak Durga Colony, R.K. Puram, State Delhi.”

Thanks very much for your blog.. Atleast people get alert from this… I have also received a similar call from relief india trust today… I was about to donate money… before just doing it i googled it and found it is fake thru ur blog…Some action should be taken against this fake peoples.

  35. Hi,
I have been getting calls from RIT for several months now and been donating then in small amounts. In recent past I have been getting calls from other NGOs also. So I am sure my number has been shared with other NGOs or those are also run by same owner as mentioned in this website.

Just before writing on this blog, I have donated few hundred rupees (I kept reducing my donation as I was not 100% convinced all the time.

This time I had asked for hospital number, doctor who is treating the patient and contact person details there. I got these details on SMS

    KALAWATI SARAN CHILDREN’S HOSIPTAL
    A.N.SINGH-01123344160 EXT-222
    Mobile : 09810493302
Doctor treating the patient Dr. Archana Puri.

I haven’t been able to find the contact number of the doctor.

Before making the payment I called the hospital by checking the number on google (it was same number). I asked receptionist if patient named Mayank is being treated there for Eye surgery complications. She said she is connecting me to their social worker and connected to A.N.Singh. Now this guy gave me same detail that the RIT caller had told me.

Going by the blog it looks to me that RIT is mostly fraud, is it possible they are mixing few genuine cases to keep themselves safe? Or is it that the hospital staff are also involved!!!

If any of you find more detail on this case please post.

    Regards,
    Sharath
