Weekly Notes 23/2025

Last week: electric vehicles, configuring Zed, a CD player, visa application for Japan & movies.

For folks not in the know, this is a weekly stream of consciousness zero-agenda “here’s what’s happening” or “here’s what’s interesting” post.

What’s been happening

  • On Anoop’s recommendation, I watched Flow last week. It’s very cool and reminded me of the Stray game. It’s a mystical journey of a cat, and it’s short and sweet. Great if you have kids too.
  • I got into a couple of autos this week, one electric and one not, and thought about how much autos fit the electric mobility model: most autos rarely go above the 200km/day threshold, and the biggest problems of being in an auto are pollution and noise. Got into an electric bus as well recently, and both made me think that the biggest beneficiaries of the coming electric car revolution may not be cars at all: with proper planned electric charging infrastructure (imagine a charger shared at every auto stand and bus station), all of us may start using these shared vehicles a lot more.
  • I spent a bunch of time configuring Zed to act like my VS Code & Cursor setup this weekend. I know Apple Silicon has made memory concerns & sluggish apps a thing of the past, but VS Code still feels overkill for an editor. Zed feels like Sublime Text, but is much more VS-Codey in its feature set: not as configurable, but it has the essentials. The only thing I miss now is a bookmarks plugin.
    • Ammu has been asking for a CD player for a while now (a lot of old Carnatic music is still available only in CDs & cassettes), and I’ve narrowed it down to this Fiio DM-13. They also make a pretty cool CP-13 cassette player. I should also get her a better sound system: she listens to a lot of music and keeps complaining that our TV soundbar isn’t good enough: my untrained ears can’t make out much of a difference 🙂
      • I took a truckload of printouts and applied to the Japan visa this week. Here’s hoping that goes through ??Ammu & I have started planning on what to do in Tokyo as well: some bucket list items: travel in a bullet train, eat kobe beef, go to teamlabs, drink sake, and visit Mount Fuji.
        • Loved this performance of Shruti Haasan with A.R. Rahman’s music:

            • Lion lights seem like a great non-invasive solution to the elephant problem in my state.
            • Thinking of trying out Claude Code this week, saw this good set of best practices from them (PDF).

            1. Ooh. Share what you end up with on Tokyo. H and I’ve been making our own Japan plans.

              1. Sure 🙂 It’s our first time there, so pretty much going to be the usual touristy things.
